I went through high school before calculators became affordable to the masses and there were lots of mental math tricks we learned that still come in handy because it’s immediately clear when there’s a wrong answer on the calculator because something was entered wrong.
I’ve had gifted students, taking calculus in high school, multiply two large numbers together, get an answer less than 1, and they’re so used to relying on the calculator it doesn’t occur to them that the answer is impossible!
